dc.description.abstractStudies have shown that elevated levels o f fasting blood glucose (FBS) fasting serum insulin (FSI) fasting serum C-peptide (FSCpepetide) and insulin resistance (IR) are seen in hypertensive subjects. The aim o f this study was to compare FBS, FSI, and FSC- peptide among hypertensive and non- hypertensive individuals. Age sex matched case control study was carried out at the Family Practice Center o f University o f Sri Jayewardenepura in a nondiabetic population, aged 35-55 years (hypertensive-30, non-hypertensive-30). After an overnight fast (10 h) 2 mL venous blood was collected and FBS was analyzed using glucose oxidase kit, FSI and FSC- peptide were analyzed using -ELISA kit. IR w as* calculated using Homeostasis Model o f Assessment-IR equation (HOMA-IR = Fasting insulin (pU/ml)xFasting glucose (mmol/l)/22.5). Data was analyzed using student t-test, with SPSS 16. Mean values o f FBS, FSI, FSC-peptide and IR in hypertensives were 91.8±19.6 mg/dL,10.5± 7.2 pU/mL,2.3± 1.4ng/mL, 2.5±1.9 and in non -hypertensives, 81.8±10.9 mg/dL, 7.0±4.2 pU/mL, 1.4±0.8 ng/mL, 1.5±1.1 respectively. The means o f measured parameters were below the risk cutoff in both groups. Only FSC- peptide had statistically significant difference (P=0.003) between the two groups while the other mean values o f hypertensives -were higher - compared to non-hypertensives. —In addition, only among hypertensives, the following percentage had above the risk cut off levels, 23.3% (FSI), 13.3 % (FSC-peptide) and 36.6% (IR).
