dc.description.abstract Motivation is one o{ the key factors which deterrnine the level of driving force of the : organization against its set tasks. It is a neirsr erding prosess drrc to the uncertainties of the dynamic enviroxment. Thcreforq this lstrdy atternpted to identiff the effect of motivation on employee productivif of &e employees. In Sri l^ankan cortext, there are no sufficient empirical findings relating to the impact of operational level workers' motivation on their productivity in the manufacturing sector Then, the problem of the study was "Does eruploy* motivation has an impact an pradactivity of machine operators in ruanufacturing cottpanies in Colombo district?" The data were collected &om a randomly selected sample of 100 machine operators in manufacturing companies in Colombo diskict by administrating a skuctured questionnaire wtich consisted of 33 questions with 5 point scale. The data analyses inciuded the univariate and bivariate anal5rses. This study found that there is positive relationship between employee motivation and productivity of the operational level workers in the manufacturing compauies and 44a/o of nariance of the productivity *as explainsd by the personal motivatioaal factors. The data revealed t}rat,22Yo of variance of the productivity was explained by the organizational factors. Thea, it formd that personal motivation factors have more impact rather than organizationd motivation factors for productivity of the operational employees. The recommendatiou made as the implemeirtatioa of personal motivational factors aod organizational motivational factors by the companies becoms important management strategy to incrgase the employee productivity
